The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) announced Wednesday starting with the 2022-2023 season, state associations can choose to adopt a 35-second shot clock in high school basketball games.
The Eagles used 34 free throws in the game to hang on 52-47. Hugoton, now winner of 20 straight, is the lone team to beat Lakin this year, and the Eagles again draw the Broncs in Saturday’s sub-state title game.
The third time is the charm. The top-ranked Lakin boys are hoping the old adage holds true. After a pair of near misses in substate finales the past two seasons, the Broncs will again play for a substate title Saturday in Larned after Friday’s 60-40 win over Holcomb.
The move to the boys’ side has been a good one for Alex Hutchins. The Hays High coach took last year’s team to the final four before the season was interrupted by a pandemic last March. Friday night, his top-ranked Indians defeated Great Bend 50-32 to cap the school’s first perfect regular season since 2013-14.
