West snaps the streak against Kapaun

WICHITA, Kan. Coming into week 2 of the 2019 season, West was in a nearly 20 year drought against Kapaun. The Pioneers hadn't won a game against the crusaders since 2000, totaling 14 losses.

And it was all West on Friday night as the Pioneers dominated not only on defense but offense too, West cruised to a 34-0 win.

"Well they gutted it up didn't they? They played good last week too,” said West head coach Weston Schartz. “We have 8 starters back on defense, they should play well and they did play well. We had to win this game and the kids played well. It's been a long time."

"We came out first off executing. They got a little rough at first but we ended up pulling it out,” said West’s sophomore running back Jomarion Nelson. “We thought it was going downhill coming halftime, had a few injuries but we ended up picking it up. We were leading up to this game, we wanted to make history and that's what we came to do."

Schartz said his team and coaches circle this game every year since the Pioneers hadn’t beat the Crusaders in almost 20 years.

They also said they feel like they made history Friday night.
