DODGE CITY, Kan. - The West Team defeated the East Team by a score of 26 to 7 in the 2019 Kansas Shrine Bowl held at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City.
The annual fundraising all-star game took place for the first time in Dodge City, the farthest west destination for the game. At the time of kickoff, the south wind blew around 20 miles an hour with gusts in the low 30s. The wind would prove to be a factor in the first half. The team with the wind to their back could kick the ball far down the field. Though the team throwing into the wind would find it not flying as planned.
Both teams spent the early part of the game trading three and outs. The East squad committed the first penalty, an encroachment on the Defense. They would go on to suffer that penalty over eight times in the game. With 2:31 left in the first quarter, the West Team crossed into the end zone for the first time. West Team quarterback Koy Brack threw a 14-yard pass to McPherson's Gabe Hoover. They attempted a two-point conversion but came up short.
The West defense stymied Shawnee Mission South's Jack Roberts, who would take the majority of the snaps for the East Team. The East never threatened to score in the first half. With 5:01 left in the second quarter, Maize's Caleb Grill threw a 13-yard pass to Trey Sides of Phillipsburg. This time the West elected to kick a point after touchdown. Taylon Peters of Salina Central successfully split the uprights with the kick.
On the ensuing kickoff, the ball hung up in the air as the wind gusted. A West player came up with the ball near the twenty-yard line. The West quickly took advantage of the gift. Grill found Larry Wilson of Valley Center with a 22-yard pass to score the third touchdown of the half. Peters came on and kicked another successful point after touchdown. At halftime, the West Team lead 20 to 0.
After the break, the wind calmed down and opened up the game. The East Team got on the board with 5:18 remaining in the third quarter. Jack Roberts scored on a six-yard quarterback keeper. After the successful point after touchdown, East Team trailed by only 13 points 20 to 7.
In the second half, the West Team kept to a mainly running attack to try and burn as much clock as possible. With 5:06 remaining in the game, they added an insurance touchdown. Taylon Peters ran into the end zone from 16 yards out to score the touchdown. He missed the point after touchdown. The final score was 26 to 7.
Quarterbacks Caleb Grill from the West Team and Jack Roberts from the East Team won their respective team's MVP award. The win moves the West's record to 28-16-1. The East Team would not repeat after last year's victory. The East still commands the recent year's record with four wins in the last seven matchups.
West Head Coach Tyson Bauerle commended his team for coming together so quickly. "They worked hard and worked together. They did not form cliques. They learned a system in a week that would normally take four months."
