Victoria boys hang on to advance over Russell

HOISINGTON, Kan. The Victoria Knights held on to defeat the Russell Broncos 60 to 59 in the first boys semifinal of the 2019 Hoisington Winter Jam.

The game started with both sides trading turnovers and missed shots. It took over two minutes before the first points fell.

The first quarter ended with a score of 14 to 12 in the Knights advantage.

Russell added ten points in the second quarter. Victoria topped that by putting up 17 points. After the horn, the score was 31 to 22 with the Knights still leading.

Victoria came out from the locker room and found a three point stroke as they put up four in the third quarter. They ended the quarter leading by fourteen.

In the fourth quarter, Russell made it interesting. With under three minutes to go, they narrowed the Victoria lead to six. The Broncos would continue to weather made shots by the Knights.

With less than ten seconds on the clock, Russell made a basket it to make a three point deficit. Then the two teams traded turnovers until Russell had the ball as time expired. They made a two pointer but could not get a foul call for a chance to tie it up.

Austin Price of Russell lead all scorers with 25 points. Glenn Law also tallied 14 points. For Victoria, Caden Oberle lead the scoring with 15 points. Cooper Windholz put up 14 points and Tyler Knoles scored 10.

"We normally like to shoot three pointers and tonight they were falling for us," said Victoria Head Coach Collin Schmidtberger. "In the fourth quarter, we let off the gas and it helped to let Russell make it so close."

Russell will play in the third place game on Saturday evening. They will face the loser of the Pratt versus Hoisington game. The winner of that game will play Victoria for the Hoisington Winter Jam Championship.
