With just 7 minutes on the clock in a 0-0 match, Valley Center freshman Ruby Aguliar came through to break the scoreless tie, scoring what became the game winning goal to send the Hornets to Emporia for the 5A Final Four.
Before we reached that point, the match was incredibly physical, pitting a pair of one-loss squads that were as evenly matched as they come.
Keepers Kyrah Klumpp and Riley Hett each made just two saves, speaking volumes to the roles that both defenses played in keeping the shots on goal to a minimum. One of the two saves from Valley Center's Klumpp was as good as they come, with the sophomore laying out to make a diving save on a free kick from Mac's Hannah Hageman.
But in the end, it was Aguilar getting past the defense just once that turned out to the difference maker in the 1-0 win, one that sent the Hornets to State for the first time since 2013.
Valley Center will meet St. James Academy in Emporia on Friday night, with kickoff in that match set for 7:00. The winner there will take on the winner between Bishop Carroll and St. Thomas Aquinas.
