Top-seed Carroll soars into State Tournament

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- Bishop Carroll proved its dominance Saturday afternoon, taking down both Arkansas City and Goddard in straight sets. The Golden Eagles earned the 1-seed in class 5A with a 31-1 record. Bishop Carroll returns to the 5A State Tournament for the second-consecutive year.

The rest of class 5A was predictive. 2-seed Andover (27-3) moved through its sub-state with ease, defeating Eisenhower and Valley Center in straight sets.

3-Seed Maize South (32-5) took down Salina South in straight sets in the play-in round, but saw some resistance from Kapaun in the finals. After losing the first set 23-25, the Mavericks won two straight 25-21, and 26-24 in extras.

Newton (28-7) rallied from behind in both of its games on Saturday. The 4-seed Railers took down Maize in three sets, 18-25, 27-25, 25-23, and McPherson in three, as well 19-25, 25-21, 25-20.

On the other side of the bracket, the top four seeds also qualified: 1-seed Lansing, 2-seed St. James Academy, 3-seed De Soto, and 4-seed St. Thomas Aquinas.
