ELLSWORTH, Kan. Two unbeaten teams remained in Class 2A, District 8 heading into week five of the season. But only top-ranked Hoisington has the likes of Wyatt Pedigo. The senior scored in a variety of ways as the Cardinals left town with a 49-7 win.
Hoisington opened with the ball and needed just five plays to march 61 yards in under three minutes. Pedigo had three carries for 46 yards on the drive, including a 29-yard run to the end zone.
Cardinal quarterback Mason Haxton converted on fourth-and-short on the next drive, then Hunter Morris ran 20 yards to the 1-yard line. Two plays later it was Pedigo around the end for his second score of the night and a 14-0 lead with 3:14 still to play in the opening quarter.
Ellsworth marched deep into Cardinal territory on its next drive but play stalled inside the 10-yard line. The Bearcats faked a field goal but Dayton Davis' pass was picked off and nearly taken the distance by Hoisington junior Joshua Ball. Seven plays later, junior Cole Steinert ran 8-yards untouched on a misdirection play.
Pedigo was far from finished. Midway through the second quarter, he tipped a Morgan Kelley pass and brought it down. He rumbled some 60 yards for the final points of the first half. On Hoisington's first drive of the second half, Pedigo moved out wide where he caught two passes for 36 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown from Haxton. Pedigo later added a 33-yard reception.
The Cardinals rolled up 167 yards of offense on the ground in the first half. Pedigo accounted for 85 of those yards and two scores on nine carries. Haxton completed his first three passes of the second half for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Ellsworth managed just 102 yards of offense in the first half. The Bearcats did get on the board late in the third quarter when Kelley capped a 14-play, 66-yard drive with a 2-yard run.
