Teams pray for late bishop before 'Holy War' kickoff

WICHITA, Kan. Prior to the annual "Holy War" between Bishop Carroll and Kapaun Mt. Carmel Friday night at Kapaun, both teams and fan bases united in prayer for a former bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita.

Bishop Eugene Gerber died on the morning of Sept. 29, three days after the diocese says he was hospitalized after suffering a heart attack. Gerber was 87 years old.

Bishop Gerber was the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Wichita, serving the leadership role from 1983 to 2001. Prior to coming to Wichita, he served as bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Dodge City from 1976 to 1982.

Memorial plans include scheduled viewings and mass Sunday, Monday and Tuesday morning. Gerber's obituary says his burial is Tuesday at Wichita's Ascension Cemetery.

Gerber's obituary says he's known best for his "oversight of the stewardship way of life in the diocese." This includes the establishment of Wichita's Lord's Diner food ministry that since 2002, has served about 5 million meals to the poor.
