State Soccer Quarterfinals Set
Top seeded Wichita East controlled possession for much of their match with Manhattan, with a pair of first half goals being all they needed to dispatch of last year's 6A runner-up 2-1. Ivan Quezada and Cali Gutierrez each scored for the Blue Aces to clinch a home game next week.
Their opponent will be Lawrence Free State, as the Firebirds got by rival Lawrence in a match that went to PK's. Both Free State and the Chesty Lions advanced to the regional final following upset wins in round one.
The other quarterfinal match will be Wichita Heights making a trip to Dodge City. Alan Lopez and Erik Martinez each scored for Dodge City in their 2-0 shutout win over Wichita Southeast.
Their opponent will be Wichita Heights in what will be a rematch of the semifinals of the Titan Classic.In the season opening tournament, Heights knocked off Dodge and then Derby for the championship. Now in the postseason, they'll face the same teams in opposite order.
Thursday night the Falcons topped Derby 3-2 with all five goals coming in the first half of play. Both sides traded goals to get it to 2-2, the last three all coming off set pieces. But it was an own goal with under a minute left in the first half that turned out to be the difference maker, with a clearance for Derby's Caden Miller going into his own net for the 3-2 score that held through the second half.
The top two seeds in the 5A tournament on the west side both advanced to host games Tuesday night, but their opponents didn't make it easy on them.
Top seed Eisenhower trailed 8 seed Great Bend at halftime 1-0, scoring early in the second but the match still needed extra time to finish. But in the first overtime Ike scored the match winner to keep their season alive. They'll take on McPherson, who with a pair of first half goals against Emporia held off the Spartans for a 2-1 win.
Then the other quarterfinal will be a rematch of a great regular season game with Maize South visiting Andover Central.
The Jaguars needed two overtimes to slip by an upset minded Bishop Carroll team. The Golden Eagles knocked off Maize Tuesday and nearly made it two road wins in a row.
Central's Tuesday opponent Maize South made it two shut-out wins in three days with a 2-0 win over Kapaun. James Evans and Adam Dyer both scored for the Mavs to set up the rematch of last week's game that saw the Jags come out on top 2-1.
2 seed Buhler entered the week after a return to the state title match, but nearly slipped up at the hands of Rose Hill Thursday. The Rockets pushed the Crusaders to the brink, forcing overtime before Buhler got the match-winner to see their season stay alive.
11th seed Wichita Trinity is one of two teams to win two road games to advance onto Tuesday's quarterfinal round. The Knights shut out both Independence and now third seeded Berean Academy, winning that one 2-0 to move on. They'll head to Buhler Tuesday evening.
The other matchup will feature 4 seed Augusta hosting Topeka Hayden. The Orioles improved to 12-6 on the season with a 2-1 win over Chanute on Thursday. Topeka Hayden will look to keep their upset run moving after they knocked out top seeded Coffeyville 1-0 in a low scoring match.
