Smith Center ties state record with 10th championship

HAYS, Kan. - Smith Center has ended the year on top yet again.

For a second straight season, the Redmen finish on top, this time in class 1A, taking home a state championship with a 59-0 win over Olpe. And this game got out of hand in a hurry. Ethan Peterson scored on a 60 yard scamper right out of the gate, that just the beginning of a rout.

The lead got to 21-0 by the end of the first quarter, and all the way to 41-0 as the teams entered halftime.

And it was more than just the offense that came to play. Olpe was in the negative at the break in yardage. They turned the ball over on four separate occasions in each half. They even ended their scoring with a blocked punt return for a touchdown.

It's the Redmen's seventh state championship since 2004, and 10th overall. The 10 titles tie Lawrence High for the most in Kansas state history.
