Shots fall for Maize in quarterfinal romp

EMPORIA, Kan. (KWCH) -- The Maize Eagles shot 56.9% as a team in the 83-56 blowout over eight-seed St. James Academy. The top-seeded Eagles had five players finish in double-figures, including a 23-point night from senior Caleb Grill.

"We just got a lot of open shots and we took the shots we wanted to take throughout the game," he said. "That's how we've had a lot of success on the offensive end."

It's the first appearance for Maize in the state tournament since 2015, and a first for this entire group of boys. Grill said they're not letting the big stage taunt them.

"It's almost like a mid-season tournament but it's bigger," he said. "We're using the same energy that we'd take to that tournament. There's no pressure on us. We're just going out there and playing basketball."

Maize will play fourth-seeded Andover Central in the Friday semifinals.
