Northwest wins a wild one over Maize, 80-42

WICHITA, Kan. A 5A sub-state rematch between Maize and Wichita Northwest went the same direction in 2019 as it did a year ago. Points not hard to come by in this one, as the Grizzlies won a shootout 80-42. For the 2nd straight year the Grizzlies knock off the Eagles to advance to the state title game. It’s the 3rd state title appearance for Northwest.

The Grizzlies opened the scoring with a 1-yard Jamar Martin TD run, capping an 80 yard drive. But the Eagles fired right back with a Caden Cox TD run to even the game up at 7-7. Each team answered again to knot things up at 14, before Northwest got a little cushion late in the 1st half, taking a 45-28 lead into halftime.
Camden Jurgensen scored on a 67 yard TD run in the 3rd, to bring the Eagles back within 10. But that’s as close as things would get as the slugfest continued throughout the game, as Northwest pulled away in the end.

Northwest gets another shot at a state title after falling in the game to St. Thomas Aquinas in the title game in 2018. Aquinas lost in the other semi Friday night though, falling to Mill Valley in overtime. The Grizzlies have never won a football state championship.
