Maize and Maize South both needed wins on Friday to set up a match between the two rivals. And they both got it done in dominant fashion, protecting their home fields and winning regional championships in the process.

While Maize South was beating Hays across town, Maize's defense came to play in holding an opponent scoreless for the third time this season, none bigger than the 31-0 win over Emporia.
Prior to the win, Maize had just one win over a team that finished 2019 with a winning record, and Emporia entered this game just two weeks removed from beating 6A quarterfinalist Junction City to end the regular season.
All that didn't matter on the field as the Eagles needed just three minutes to find the endzone and never looked back. Preven Christon scored there and again just before halftime, Caden Cox and QB Camden Jurgensen both added scores on the ground to pace the offense in the big win.
All that sets up a game between the two rivals in the playoffs for a second straight year, this time Maize South hosting the Eagles. Last season Maize blanked the Mavs 35-0 in the regional round on their way to a sub-state runner-up finish.
