MAIZE, Kan. Coming into the matchup against Maize, Bishop Carroll was riding a four game winning streak, fresh off of a win over then undefeated Wichita Heights. It was no surprise that the Golden Eagles would push Maize to the brink, but they fell just short in a 56-52 overtime thriller.
This game came as the conclusion to the AVCTL - GWAL challenge, which puts teams from the City League against the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail, each game lived up to its respective hype but none would come close to this showdown.
It was a defensive battle most of the night, both teams fighting to earn points on either end. Brandle Easter Jr. led all scorers with 19 followed by Devon Koehn with 15. Bishop Carroll was able to mix in shots from the perimeter with strong play from slashing guards who were able to finish at the rim.
No bucket would prove to be more timely than the uncontested three by Caleb Grill in overtime to put Maize up for good. When the senior was asked about what went right for the Eagles, he added, "I thought we executed down the stretch and that's what helped us get over the hump and win the game."
Another senior who had an impressive night for Maize was Chase Schriener, who added only six points from the floor but was the floor general Maize needed to relieve pressure from Grill and Easter Jr.
"It was crazy, honestly, especially as it got close down the stretch," said Schreiner. "Both student sections were going at it, people were yelling at the refs. It was a fun game to play in."
