Andover Central struck first, taking advantage of a short field following a punt with Shomari Parnell punching it in from 2 yards out.
The teams traded field goals to get it to 10-3, then Maize South found their groove in the second quarter. Harper Kennedy tied it at 10 with a one-handed pick he returned for a score, then Colin Shields found Byron Fitchpatrick for a score to give the Mavs a halftime lead.
It was all defense in the second half. The teams traded turnovers before Maize South was able to capitalize, getting their second defensive score of the day on a Trevion Mitchell fumble return for six to push the advantage to 14. Xavier Bell caught a late score to cut the deficit in half, but that was as close as the Jags would get as they suffered their first loss of the season.
Both teams will be at home in week 6, with Maize South looking to stay perfect against 4-1 Eisenhower while Andover Central will take on Great Bend.
