With sub-state starting next week, Maize South needed to get the taste of a loss to Eisenhower earlier in the week out of their mouths. And while Goddard put up a fight, the Mavs were able to escape with a tough 62-54 win.
The Mavs jumped out to a 13-5 lead early, but Goddard shot themselves right back into the game, taking a second quarter lead at 19-17. But going to half tied at 22, senior Nolan Veenis hit a shot before the buzzer to give Maize South some momentum heading into the locker room.
They used that momentum to get the lead into double digits, taking a 10 point lead to the fourth and never looking back in the eight point win.
Maize South finishes the year with a 15-5 mark, and will enter sub-state as the 7 seed in Class 5A. They'll open up postseason play with a home game against Andover Thursday night. Goddard falls to 3-17, and will travel to Great Bend in a play-in game set for Tuesday night.
