Local stars shine at Perry Ellis Hoopfest

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -- A brand new grassroots summer basketball tournament is sweeping the MAYB scene in Wichita, and it's led by Perry Ellis.

Newton high school guard Ty Berry is an attraction heading into his senior year, even bringing Wichita State players Erik Stevenson and Grant Sherfield to the stands.

"It was cool, you know, I've never seen him play and he's athletic and strong, you know. he's a good player," Stevenson said.

Berry said the summer tournaments are a helpful way for his Newton Railers team to prepare for the more important winter season. They're implementing a new system, and this tournament allows them to experiment without consequence.

"It's a good opportunity for us guys to get in the gym and play hard together and build more chemistry for the season," Berry said.

Newton leads the tournament after Saturday at 3-0. The Railers will play Haven on Sunday at 9:00am in the championship bracket.
