Lawrence High wins 6A state swimming; Wichita East takes third

Despite not winning an individual event, the Lawrence High Lions took the 6A state girls swimming title Saturday with 303 points, using the depth of the team to push them past Shawnee Mission East and defending champion Wichita East for the first place trophy.

Lawrence had a top 8 finisher in each of the 12 events, including silver medals in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. The Lions also took third in four events.

Wichita East, who won state last year, finished in third despite leading all schools with four first place event finishes. The Aces won gold in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, while junior Astrid Dirkzwager won gold in both the 100 free and 100 back. East took places 1, 3 & 4 in the backstroke, dominating the field to secure the top three finish.

Wichita West was represented well by junior Maci McCullough. A year after finishing third in the 200 free, McCullough improved to win the gold, also winning a silver in the 100 free.
