In a low-scoring slugfest, Valley Center edged out Andover 13-10 in front of a raucous crowd.
On the opening drive, Andover moved it well. Sophomore quarterback Eli Fahnestock connected with fellow sophomore Max Smith down the sideline for a big gain. Later in the drive though, on 4th down, Fahnestock had a pass into the endzone broken up by Valley Center's Dakota Kieso.
That play on defense swung the early momentum, and later in the 1st, senior running back Larry Wilson broke off a long run to set up the Valley Center offense in the red zone. Before the quarter ended, sophomore QB Myles Thompson punched it in on a keeper to give the Hornets a 7-0 lead.
Andover added a field goal in the 2nd quarter, to make it a 7-3 game at the half.
The Trojans took a 10-7 lead in the 3rd before a late Valley Center score made it 13-10 with just over five minutes to play.
The Hornet defense held on to the lead and Valley Center picked up the win.
