Kinsley girls spoil Ellinwood Homecoming in OT thriller

ELLINWOOD, Kan. It's one thing to spoil Homecoming. It's quite another thing to steal it. The Kinsley girls trailed Ellinwood for much of the half in Friday's road game. The Lady Coyotes gave up their own lead late in regulation and trailed by five points early in overtime before pulling out a 60-53 win.

Ellinwood led 39-34 early in the fourth thanks to five points from senior Maddy Ward inside. But free fouls would hurt the Lady Eagles. Kinsley made it to the double-bonus with 2:12 to play and cut the lead to 41-40 with a free throw from junior Josena Frame. Two free throws from senior Rylee Gleason with 53 ticks left gave Kinsley its first lead of the final quarter.

"Knowing we were close to a 1-and-1, we just had to keep taking it into them," Frame said. "We couldn't really take stuff in the lane since (Ward) is just so much bigger than us. But we had to keep taking it in there because they'd foul you one way or another, whether it was a shot or not. Then we got free throws late and it helped out."

Ellinwood stayed alive with an inbounds bucket from Daphne Doll with 18 seconds in regulation. Leading by one, Gleason made one of two shots from the stripe with 13 ticks left. That left the door open for some heroics from Ward, who snagged a ball underneath the Lady Eagle basket and tied the game in the final seconds. Gleason's desperation heave to win bounced off the glass.

Lady Eagle sophomore Mya Maxwell opened the extra period with a 3-pointer, then Ward added her 26th points of the night. The lead was 53-48.

The Coyotes fought back for good. Gleason hit a three, then Frame tied the game with a pair of freebies. She made her first seven shots from the line in the extra frame. On her last shot, a miss, teammate Madison McElwain was there for the stickback. Kinsley finished the game with a 12-0 run.

"I always just think make the first one and the second one will be just as easy," said Frame, who paced the Coyotes with 25 points. "It's the same shot. I just had to make the first one then I thought I was pretty good."

Ward scored 12 points in a big first half. She led all players with 26 points for Ellinwood and got the double-double with 10 rebounds. She also had several blocks in the loss. Daphne Doll scored a big one-one down the stretch and finished with 11 points. Maxwell added 10 points.

Gleason swished four threes in the second half and overtime to finish with 19 points. Junior Cindy Ibarra finished with eight points, and McElwain added seven points and seven rebounds.
