WICHITA For the first time since finishing as Class 5A runner-up in 2016, Kapaun will be returning to State following a 56-38 win over Valley Center Friday night.
Ethan Stuhlsatz paced the Crusaders with 13 while senior Jairus Kennedy added 12 off the bench to lead a balanced effort in the big home win.
Kapaun jumped out to a 15-5 first quarter lead, but had to hold of Hornet charges to get the win. Valley cut it from 12 to 7 early in the second, then again in the third but that was as close as the game would get in the final 24 minutes.
The Crusaders extended the lead to 15 through three, pushing it to as much as 19 in getting to the state tourney.
Now with a 16-6 mark, the Crusaders await final seeding as their opponent for the tourney starting next Wednesday in Emporia.
