The Pirates entered the Class 4A Tournament in Salina as the fourth seed with an 18 and 4 record. Augusta came in with the seventh seed on a 16 and 6 record.
The Orioles took a quick two point lead after getting the opening tip off. Piper's speed allowed them to quickly tie and then grab the lead.
The Pirates would never surrender that lead. They held a 20 to 12 advantage at the end of the first quarter. With three minutes left in the second quarter, Piper led by 17, which would be the largest margin in the half.
By halftime they doubled their point total and lead Augusta 40 to 28.
Tyrone Bates for Piper ended the first half with 13 points including two three pointers.
Both teams were close on rebounds with Augusta having nine defensive to Piper's ten in the first half. Where Piper shined was on offensive rebounds. They had seven to the Orioles one. Those offensive rebounds led to seven second chance baskets.
Piper shut the door in the fourth quarter. They put up 30 points in the final period.
Augusta could not find a way to stop the speed of the Pirates. They would trade baskets at times. The Orioles were unable to generate the defensive stops or turnovers to slow down the Piper scoring.
At the final whistle, Piper won by a score of 86 to 53.
Tyrone Bates led all scorers with 21 points. He also recorded eight assists, five rebounds, and three steals on the night. Teammate Tamar Bates added 20 points. Tyren Shelley contributed 15 points. Braijon Barnes scored 12 points and Brandan Jackson tallied 11 points.

The victory marks the first ever Basketball Championship for the Piper Pirates.
"It's wonderful," said Piper Head Coach Toure' Grimes. "It feels like a dream right now. My players put it together, they worked hard. It was a total team effort."
