Wichita Independent held off a late Belle Plaine charge Monday night to advance to the sub-state semifinals in Class 2A with a 43-36 first round win.
The Panthers jumped out to a quick start, taking a 17-4 lead early in the second and extending that to as much as 32-16 in the second half, but Belle Plaine wouldn't go away.
Taylor Bohannan got hot from deep, finishing with 21 points and heading up the charge to cut the deficit to just four points late in the fourth quarter.
But in the end the Panthers held on, never letting the lead shrink any further to advance.
The Panthers improve to 14-7 on the season and will take on Garden Plain on Thursday night in Sedan. The two league rivals split the regular season series; Independent won 43-32 in the first meeting before Garden Plain returned the favor with a 47-27 win two weeks ago.
