Hoisington poised for big 2019

The Hoisington Cardinals come into the 2019 season as one of the top teams in Class 2A's western bracket. To get the State Championship game, they will need to go through the defending champions at least once.

Forty-one players make up Coach Zach Baird's team. The team is anchored by a 10-man Senior class. The notable member of this Senior class is Wyatt Pedigo.

Pedigo plays running back and linebacker. The two time 3-2-1A State Wrestling Champion averaged 191 yards per game last year and scored 29 touchdowns. He also totaled 104 tackles on defense. This summer he committed to play for FCS school the University of North Dakota.

While the Senior class garners attention, right behind them are 15 Juniors. "I like that, " said Coach Baird. "We've got an older group and with that comes a lot of experience."

Hoisington's first two games will be on the road with Central Kansas League matchups against Pratt and Nickerson. The game that many are looking forward to is on October 18th when the Cardinals host Phillipsburg.

Phillipsburg will come in as the defending Class 2A State Champions. They also knocked Hoisington out of the playoffs for the last two years.

On the schedule, Coach Baird said, "It's tough with a lot of good teams on it. I don't see any weeks off and I think that's great for our guys. You got to prepare each week and bring it and if you don't, bad things will happen."
