It looked like we were set to have Cheney and Nickerson face off in a battle of unbeaten teams for the Wildcat Classic. But host Haven had other plans in the nightcap Friday night.
Nickerson won the first matchup with their league rival back in December, handing Haven their first loss at the time. The Wildcats have only lost once since, that to an unstoppable Central Plains team.
On Friday night, the game looked like it could go either way. Both teams traded buckets throughout the first half, with both teams knotted up at 20 at the break.
Then Faith Paramore took over.
Paramore scored 32, most of those points coming after the break, to lead Haven past Nickerson and into the finals of the Wildcat Classic.
Awaiting the Wildcats will be another unbeaten team, the Cheney Cardinals.
Lead by sophomore Kylee Scheer, the Cardinals held off a late charge from Rose Hill to advance to the title game.
Scheer finished with 24, 13 of those in the first half. But no four bigger than in the final moments of the game.
Up by four, Scheer was able to avoid the foul and drove to the bucket to push the lead to 47-41. On the next Rose Hill trip, fellow sophomore Lexi Cline got a steal, pushed it up to Scheer who delivered the dagger in a 49-41 win.
Cheney and Haven will meet for the Wildcat Classic championship Saturday at 3:30pm. Rose HIll will take on Nickerson for third place at 2:00.
