HALSTEAD, Kan. In a Class 3A battle of contenders from District 5, Halstead fought from behind late to force overtime and ultimately take down Chapman, 30-22.
In the third quarter, Halstead held a 14-8 lead when Chapman's bruising fullback Dalton Harvey found the end zone to tie the game at 14.
Chapman tacked on another touchdown and a two-point conversion to take a 22-14 lead in the fourth quarter. The Irish took the lead on another Harvey touchdown, this one a short run set up by a quarterback keeper by Izek Jackson who pushed his way to near the goal line.
Halstead would have the final word. Facing fourth and goal late in the game, Scott Grider powered just past the goal line. A successful conversion tied it at 22, sending the game into overtime.
Halstead carried its late momentum into overtime, escaping to protect its home field and setting itself up favorably for the Class 3A playoffs starting next week.
