"It's just a night I'll probably remember for the rest of my life."
You can understand why Maize's Caleb Grill might say that. The night for he and the Eagles, summed up:
--43 points, a career best
--First player in school history to score 1,000 career points
--Maize improves to 15-0
--Senior class sweeps Derby for the first time
Just the latest in a long list of accomplishments for the South Dakota State commit and company.
With Grill scoring 7 quick points, Maize jumped out to a 9-0 lead. The lead kept on growing, then Derby started to wake up. Clayton Hood scored 8 of his team best 23 in the second to lead the charge, getting the Panthers back within a point at halftime, the score 36-35.
Derby would tie the game up at 39, then Maize just went off.
Grill hit the three to give him 1,000, and his team rallied from there. Next came a four point play, then another three. Grill had 17 of his 43 in the third quarter alone as Maize closed the third on a 22-3 scoring run, effectively putting the game out of reach in what turned out to be a 72-59 win.
Sitting at 15-0, Maize will face Buhler Tuesday before going to what might be their toughest game remaining, a visit to Campus Friday night.
