GREAT BEND, Kan. Great Bend defeated Wichita Independent by a score of 4 to 3 in eight innings to secure a doubleheader sweep.

Great Bend won the first game by a score of 11 to 3.

Wichita Independent came into the second game looking for a split on the day. They managed to get their leadoff hitter on base in the first two innings. Both times, Independent saw the runner get stranded at third base.

In the top of the third, Wichita Independent pitcher Josh Jacobsen walked to start the inning. He advanced to second on a Bryson Toubassi bunt single. Then made it to third base on a throwing error by the Great Bend first baseman.

Wayln Chand hit to the shortstop and was thrown out at first. His play was enough to get Jacobsen home and score the first run of the game. Levi Newman came to the plate next and hit a single to center which scored Toubassi and gave Independent a two to zero lead.

Great Bend went down in order in each of the first three innings.

Great Bend's starting pitcher, Jesus Bujanda, had a rough start. He pitched for four innings giving up two earned runs, four walks, and two hits. He also recorded three strikeouts.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Great Bend got on the board for the first time in the game. Calan Haberman bunted to start the inning. He immediately stole second and then advanced to third. Eddie Bujanda hit the ball to the shortstop, who then threw him out at first base. Bujanda's play allowed Haberman to score.

To start the fifth inning, Jesus Bujanda walked the first batter he faced. Coach Randy Beck of Great Bend decided it was time to change pitchers. Colin Hall took over and struck out the first batter he faced.

Hall did allow a single by Wayln Chand which scored the walked batter, Josh Jacobsen.

Great Bend added a second run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Calan Haberman singled softly to the pitcher. He then reached second on a fielding error by the first baseman. Haberman stole third with only one out. The next batter, Chance Perry, singled to shallow right and scored Haberman.

Behind only one run, Great Bend sat in a comfortable position going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Joey Soupiset hit a single to left field. He then stole second and advanced to third. Jesus Bujanda hit a deep ball to center field and scored Soupiset. Bujanda extended his hit into a triple.

Great Bend could not drive Bujanda home, so the game went into extra innings.

Wichita Independent went down in order in the top of the eighth inning.

Great Bend only needed one run to end the game. They started the bottom of the eighth with a fly out to center. Then Chance Perry walked. He stole second and made it to third on a passed ball. The next batter Townshend Kurth walked also.

Wichita Independent coach Jamie Fowler loaded the bases by intentionally walking Eddie Bujanda. The following batter, Joey Soupiset, flew out to center field.

Alex Schremmer stepped up to the plate and hit a walkoff single to center field. Chance Perry crossed the plate to record the win.

Colin Hall ended the game pitching four innings with no walks, two hits, three strikeouts, and no earned runs.

For Wichita Independent, Josh Jacobsen pitched all eight innings with three walks, seven hits, three strikeouts, and three earned runs.

"Two solid games from the kids," said Great Bend Head Coach Randy Beck. "I'm very proud. That was our goal after being swept by two good teams Tuesday. I just wanted to play some fundamental baseball. We did that today."
