After both teams saw sizable leads whither away, the season opening matchup between Garden Plain and Wichita Trinity came down to the final shot, with the two-time defending champion Owls coming away with a 51-50 win to start the year.
Trinity came out on fire, taking advantage of a turnover filled quarter from the Owls to lead it 14-4 through one. But the Owls chipped away throughout the second quarter, enough to completely erase the deficit and lead by one at half.
After a back and forth third, the Owls took their turn at making a run to put the game away, going up by as much as 9, 47-38, midway through the fourth quarter. It was then Trinity's turn to come back, going on a 12-2 run to take the lead on a deep two from Austin Broadie with under 40 seconds to play.
With one final shot at retaking the lead, Garden Plain used much of the clock, needing three shot attempts before Christia Rose Gorges corraled her own blocked shot to pop in the game-winner with less than five seconds to play, securing a 51-50 win to open the season for the Owls.
