Goddard outlasts East in season opener

GODDARD, Kan. - Opening the high school football season on Thursday night with Wichita East traveling to Goddard.
The Blue Aces trying to avenge their loss to the Lions last year falling 32-8 and the Lions looking to make a repeat trip to the State Championship in their second year in Class 4A.

Following an on-side kick by Goddard to open the game and a rough first offensive possession by East, the Lions drew first blood in the the first quarter with Kyler Semrad firing a pass to Kaeden Hoefer for the score, a missed 2-point conversion made it 6-0.

After going scoreless until late in the second, the Aces started putting up a fight, answering back with a touchdown of their own to even the score. The Aces strung together a couple down-field receptions, leading to Jake Hughes finding Daylan Jones for the score.

But the Lions kick it into gear after that score. with Dhimani Butler answering with a short touchdown run to give Goddard the lead before Hoefer found the endzone again, giving them a 21-6 lead going into the half.

The lead grew to as much as 34-14 before the Lions held on for a 34-22 win, the game going late into the night clocking in at well over 3 hours.

Now at 1-0, Goddard will travel to Ark City next Friday night. East will play a second straight Thursday game, facing a second consecutive defending state runner-up in Wichita Northwest.
