With 12 wrestlers out of the 14 weight classes qualifying for the state tournament, Goddard finished with 244.5 points to hold off second place Maize and win yet another regional title in Class 5A.

It's the second straight year the Lions have sent 12 to the state tourney, putting them in good position to make it six straight team titles at Hartman Arena next weekend.

The Lions led the way with four gold medalists among the 12 state qualifiers, with three others finishing runner-up Saturday in Valley Center.

Jerrdon Fisher got the first win Saturday for the Lions, a 9-4 decision over Xerarch Tungjaroenkul from Emporia. Cayleb Atkins improved to 42-2 with a win over Carson Wheeler from Maize, shutting Wheeler out 3-0.

At 182, Trevor Dopps got takedown after takedown, taking a major decision over second ranked Lynauz Cox from Maize South 14-2. Then in the final bout of the day, the top ranked heavyweight in 5A Devon Dawson got a third period pin of Valley Center's Tony Caldwell, ending the match at the 4:57 mark.

Maize, the number two ranked team in the state, finished with 216 points, with Great Bend a distant third at 159 points.

The Eagles had five wresters competing for gold Saturday, three of those coming out on top. Devin Gomez won his 74th consecutive match at 152 pounds, a decision win over Jace Fisher of Goddard. At 170, Duwayne Villalpando also won by decision over a Lion, a 10-5 win voer Nolan Craine. Then at 220, Kyle Haas made quick work of McPherson's Mason Thrash, winning by pinfall at just 1:12 into the match.
