Goddard hands Valley Center its first home loss

VALLEY CENTER, Kan. (KWCH) -- The wind played the part of the 12th man in this matchup, allowing Goddard to take advantage of good field position early.

The Lions blocked a Valley Center punt on the first possession, leading to a red zone opportunity with strong winds at their backs toward the north end zone.

Goddard quarterback Kyler Semrod fired to his tight end Blake Mitchell for the opening score.

Next possession, Ben Bannister took a hand-off from the 50-yard-line and went untouched into the end zone for his first of two on the night. His second came moments later from inside the red zone to make it 21-0 Goddard.

The only score of the second quarter came from Kam'ron Gonzalez, on a short run into the south end zone. Gentry Cole's extra point was blocked, and Goddard took a 27-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

Cole made up for his miss with a 47-yard field goal in the third quarter, followed by a 37-yarder.

Valley Center made its comeback in the second half, starting with a touchdown pass from Parker Schrater to Kade Wilson for 87-yards.

Schrater later hit Zach Williams for a 22-yard touchdown pass, before Williams took back a pick six for his second score of the night.

The comeback fell short, as Goddard hung on to win 40-27 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Valley Center falls to 3-3.
