5A No. 5 Maize South led for almost the entirety of regulation and held a 32-25 lead with just five minutes left in the game. The Mavericks would score just two more points in regulation time.

Goddard came all the back for the 45-42 overtime win.

Maize South jumped out to a big 15-5 first-quarter lead, but a four-point second quarter only gave the Mavericks a 19-15 halftime lead.

They held that lead until late in the game.

The Mavericks started using chunks of clock, eating as much as 90 seconds at a time. The strategy didn’t pay off well, as they struggled to finish at the rim.

Goddard took advantage, trimming the seven-point led to four, then three, then Goddard’s Ashlynn Wcislo drained a three from the corner right in front of her team’s bench to tie it at 34 with 1:05 left to play.

The three-pointer was her only of the game as she finished with 5 points, all in the fourth quarter.

Kade Hackerott hit a huge three at the beginning of the overtime and then sank all six of her free throws in the overtime period. Hackerott accounted for nine of her team’s 11 overtime points. She scored a game-high 22 points in the upset win.

Goddard’s Anahi Nunez added 10 points for the Lions.

Kaydyn Davison led Maize South with 15 points and Katie Wagner scored 14 in the loss.
