Girls 6A state basketball day one recap
Liberal 41, Olathe South 33 - The top seeded Redskins were led by senior Machia Mullens who finished with a game high 20 points, to outlast the Falcons 41-33. Liberal is ranked first in the 6A tournament for the second year in a row, but this season they'll advance to Friday's semifinals against four seed Derby (21-2) at 3 at Koch Arena.
Derby 44, Shawnee Mission Northwest 39 - The fourth seeded Panthers defeated the fifth seeded Cougars in double overtime to advance to Friday's semifinals against one seed Liberal (23-0) at 3. SMNW's Kennedy Taylor finished with a game high 14 points and 14 rebounds, but the Panthers were able to get a stop defensively, holding the Cougars scoreless in the second overtime.
Topeka 79, Olathe North 55
Two seed Topeka (23-0) got the most dominating win of the day over seven seed Olathe North (16-6). Topeka will face Olathe East (18-5) Friday at 6:30.
Olathe East 49, Heights 48
The third seeded Falcons were upset by six seed Olathe East after coming back from a five point deficit with four minutes left to play. Junior Laniah Randle led the Falcons with a game high 22 points. With the loss, the Falcons finished the season 21-2. Olathe East will face undefeated Topeka Friday at 6:30
