Junior Raul Gerhardus found the back of the net four times Tuesday night, sending Maize South to a 6-0 start in a 5-1 win over district rival Maize.
In just the second meeting ever between the schools in boys soccer, Gerhardus came through in a big way to make it back to back wins for the Mavericks over the Eagles.
Maize struck first, off the foot of Andy Nam who created a one-on-one opportunity off a throw in, burying a shot in the corner of the net.
But from there, it was all Maize South. Gerhardus tallied his first goal of the match on a penalty kick, taking a tackle in the box before slipping it past Kesav Bhakta for the equalizer late in the first half. Then not even two minutes, Landon Eskridge nailed what turned out to be the game winner, slipping one by Bhakta for a 2-1 lead.
Then after halftime, Gerhardus netted three more goals, making it a brace in the 56th minute before hitting two more in the final 12 minutes.
The win moves the Mavs to a perfect 6-0 in their quest to return to the state title game. Maize drops to 2-2 on the season following the loss.
