Garden Plain knocks off Sterling in HOA/CPL Challenge

STERLING, Kan. - The Garden Plain Lady Owls traveled to Sterling and beat the Lady Black Bears 56 to 48.

Both teams entered the game in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association rankings. The Lady Owls sit at number three in Class 2A and the Lady Black Bears at number ten also in 2A.

The two teams played the game on a Thursday evening and boys teams had the night off.

Sterling took an early lead in the first quarter. They held a seven-point advantage for a while.

Garden Plain used the second quarter to chip away at the lead. By the time the horn sounded for halftime, the Lady Owls had Sterling's lead down to two, 20 to 18.

Midway in the third quarter, the Lady Owls took the lead.

For a couple of minutes, the two sides would trade the lead back and forth. Garden Plain and Sterling ended the third frame tied at 36.

In the fourth quarter, Garden Plain took lead. Late fouls helped the Lady Owls increase the lead and secure the victory.

The final score was 56 to 48.

The Lady Owls went 20 for 23 from the free throw line. The only misses of the night came in the fourth quarter. Those missed free throws came late in the game and when the lead was enough to hold.

Garden Plain's Lauren Danahy lead all players with 21 points scored on the night, including four three-pointers. For Sterling, Kinzie Comley scored the most points with 14.

The Sterling Lady Black Bears fall to 2 and 3 and will host LaCrosse next Wednesday.

The Garden Plain Lady Owls go to 5 and 1 on the season and will host Kingman next Thursday.
