WICHITA, Kan. Senior night at Kapaun Mt Carmel belonged to the youngest player on the varsity roster as freshman Sophia Gimino scored a game-high 27 points in the 62-44 win over Wichita Southeast.
Following Gimino in scoring effort for Kapaun was junior Ella Anciaux with 20. Southeast senior Daznae Greene scored a team-high 12 points on the night for the Buffaloes, trailed by Jaila Harding with 9.
Kapaun got out to a fast start against the Buffaloes, carrying a double digit lead to halftime. Gimino and Anciaux proved to be too much on the perimeter and underneath the basket. The Crusaders ran most of their offense through guard play that opened up the post for Anciaux, when the Southeast defense collapsed she finished at the rim or found the open shooter.
Southeast sported a run of its own in the second half where Greene converted two plays driving to the basket, finishing through the foul. Harding also found success against Kapaun guards by driving off the dribble or finding Endayah Donnell, who scored 6 of her 8 points in the 4th quarter.
The win for Kapaun marks the the last game of the regular season while Southeast will finish with a road game at Wichita South.
