Former East star Samajae Haynes-Jones relishing underdog role at WSU

PHILADELPHIA - It's not much of a shocker to see Wichita State Ranked 8th in the American Conference Preseason Poll. Just two seniors return for the Shox--Markis McDuffie and former East High star Samajae Haynes-Jones.

Their head coach Gregg Marshall saw it coming.

"It's kind of where I thought we would be, relative to what we have coming back. We don't have a whole lot of experience so it's hard to really gauge how good we can or will be," said Marshall.

The team returns just 11.2 percent of it's minutes from last season, with McDuffie and Haynes-Jones leading the way. For the former Blue Ace, the ranking gives Marshall and the rest of the Shockers a bit of bulletin board material.

"That's pretty much Gregg Marshall's whole life, you know, being the underdog. So you know, that's going to fuel him and that's going to fuel us for the year."

Haynes-Jones and the new look Shockers kick off their season with an exhibition against Catawba on October 30th before officially starting their year November 6th at home against Louisiana Tech.
