WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH, Wichita Sports HOF) -- Evan Wessel, a seven-time champion at the high school and college level, was inducted into his hometown Wichita Sports Hall of Fame, Saturday.
Wessel led the Wichita Heights Falcons to a 6A State Championship, before winning four Missouri Valley Conference titles at Wichita State.
He joins 13 other athletes and organizations as part of the 2019 Wichita Sports Hall of Fame Class:
Bobby Bribiesca - Since Northwest H.S. opened in 1978, Bobby Bribiesca is the only boys soccer coach the school. has ever had. He has helped put the sport of soccer on the city of Wichita map. He privately raised the money to construct the Northwest soccer complex and won Kansas State soccer championships in 1995 and 2011 and numerous City League championships. In 2011, Coach Bribiesca was named national soccer coach of the year by the National Association of Soccer Coaches.
Arthur Brown - As a sophomore and junior, Brown was a consensus first-team Class 6A all-state football selection and as a senior he was named to the "Second 11" all-state team. In the 2012 season, at KSU Brown won the 2012 Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Brown also spent 4 seasons in the NFL. Inducted Wichita East HOF.
Bryce Brown - Bryce Brown played running back for East from 2005 to 2008. With over 6,000 yards rushing, Bryce is the best back in the history of Wichita City League football. As a four-time All-City back and numerous All-State awards, Bryce went on to play in the NFL. Inducted Wichita East HOF.
Dr. Bradley Bruner - Dr. Bruner has served local athetes for 28 years. As of his induction, he is the team doctor for all sports at Friends University since 1991, Southwestern College since 1992 and Butler Community College since 1992. He has also served athletes over the years from Pratt Coummunity College, Cowley College, Wichita North High School and Andover High School as team doctor.
Debbie Walker Christiansen - Known as a bowler who can pick up difficult spares, Debbie was one of the best lady bowlers in Wichita in the 1980’s. She is also a four time Wichita USBC senior bowler of the year winning this award in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. She is also active in the Wichita bowling community serving on various committees and always making bowling better in Wichita. Inducted Wichita Bowling HOF.
Carl Hall - Carl Hall came to WSU in the fall of 1990 from Haysville. Carl Hall finished his Wichita State baseball career with a .328 average, 303 hits, 249 runs, 58 doubles, 127 RBIs, 127 walks, and 110 stolen bases. In addition to being the 1994 MVC Player of the Year, Hall was also named to the MVC All-Centennial Team and WSU 25-Year Anniversary Team in 2007. 1994 MVC Player of the Year and a third-team All-American. Inducted Shocker HOF.
Dave Hawley - Since joining Collegiate High School in 1977, Coach Hawley has won 52 Kansas high school boys and girls tennis championships. His first state tennis championship was a girls tennis state championship in 1986 and was the first of 29 girls tennis state championships along with 23 boys tennis state championships. Inducted National H. S. Coaches Association HOF.
Frankie Lies - Frankie Lies competed in over 2,000 racing programs in his career and is tied for seventh place in lifetime N.C.R.A. super modified victories. Frankie drove many types of racing cars including hot rods, sprint cars, super sprints, stock cars, hardtop stock cars, semi-late model stock cars, late model stock cars, Grand National stock cars, midgets, three-quarter midgets (TQ), micro midgets, jalopies, modified jalopies, modified stock cars, full body modifieds, super modifieds, go-karts, rails, desert race cars, and even dragsters. Inducted 81 Speedway HOF and High Banks HOF.
Johnny Murdock - A South graduate, Johnny Murdock was All-State in 1991 and the City League scoring champion that year, while leading the Titans to a state basketball championship. A two-time All-MVC player, Murdock set a career record at Missouri State with his 266 three-point field goals and his final career total of 1,834 points makes him the third highest scorer in Bear history. Inducted Missouri State Bears Athletic HOF.
Gary Navarro - Gary Navarro is one of the best golfers to ever compete at WSU. His accomplishments include, All-America golfer in 1973. He was also All-MVC in 1972,1973 and a medalist in 1972 MVC Golf Championships. Inducted Shocker HOF.
Don Hall - “NINTH ANNUAL MAL ELLIOTT SPORTS MEDIA INDUCTEE” Don Hall is a legend as a public address announcer. Don has done P.A. for the Shockers basketball program for 36 years since 1983, indoor pro football since 2000 with the Warlords, Stealth, Aviators, Wild and Force. Also, Wichita Wings Soccer from 1991 to 2001, Outlaw basketball 1991-92 season, Wind Hockey 1980 to 1983 and NBC baseball 1979 to 1995. Inducted Kansas Pro Indoor Football HOF.
