East blanks Free State to reach first Final Four since 2014

Wichita East won their 18th consecutive game, shutting out Lawrence Free State 3-0 Tuesday afternoon to reach the Class 6A Semifinals.

The shutout win gets the Blue Aces to the Final Four for the first time since the 2014 season.

Ivan Quezada got things started for East, zipping through the defense on a perfect ball from Martin Rodriguez to make it a 1-0 game, the lone scoring of the first half.

Less than a minute into the second, East added another, this time Angel Derath assisting on cross to Cali Gutierrez to make it a 2-0 game. The Aces added a third off the foot of Abdullah Ahmed, holding that score in the 3-0 win.

Up next for Wichita East is the state semifinal round where they will meet Blue Valley West on Friday night. BV West makes a return trip to the semifinal round after winning it all in 2017.

In the other 6A semifinal, the lone team to beat Wichita East this year in Dodge City advanced to the semifinal round with a 3-0 shutout of Wichita Heights. The Red Demons also fell short of a trip to the Final Four last year following a streak of appearances including a state championship in 2016.
