Dodge City outlasts Great Bend
The Red Demons earned a home opening 39-33 win over WAC rival Great Bend Thursday night on the mat. They overcame 12-0 deficit after losing their first two matches by fall.
“A lot of our kids got really nervous, you can tell they were amped up with the crowd which is natural,” Dodge City head wrestling coach Lars Lueders said. “Overall, the effort was there. Look at a guy like Kennedy (Escobedo), holy smokes that was amazing. That was one of the coolest matches I’ve ever seen in my life.”
Kennedy Escobedo wasn’t scheduled for the match of the night but he stole the show. The 120 pound wrestler battled back after getting his shoulder popped out of place to pull out the decision in the 3rd round.
“The shoulder dislocates, and last year I couldn’t wrestle because of the shoulder injury,” Escobedo said. “I just had to be mentally tough. He got me in the first periods but I just decided not to give up, went hard and just got the win at the last minute.”
Dodge City will be in action again Friday night in a tournament at Hoisington.
