DERBY, Kan. (KWCH) -- The Derby Panthers played host to the Salina Central Mustangs in what was a battle of the unbeatens. Derby coming off of an easy win over Garden City while Salina Central snapped a two year losing streak with a win over Goddard Eisenhower.
Garden City High School's football team played on the road vs Derby High School on Friday August 31, 2018 at Panther Stadium in Derby, Kan. The Buffalos lost to the Panthers 6 - 49.
The Panthers took control of the game early on, dominating the mustangs in each phase of the game. Despite early penalties and some issues with personnel issues the Panthers looked to be in midseason form.
Derby Quarterback Grant Adler gave a spark on offense both through the air and on the ground. The junior quarterback found Davin Simms on the first drive for a touchdown before leading a drive that ended in a QB sneak on the one. Adler has a ton of weapons around him that are going to be key if the Panthers are going to make another run to state.
Wide out Davin Simms gave the Panthers a boost in the special teams department, scoring on a punt return near the end of the first half.
On the defensive side of the ball, Derby looked strong up front and got to the quarterback at will. The panthers earned their first shut-out of what could be many this season, beating Central 63-0.
Up next Salina Central will look to right the ship against cross town rival Salina South, while the Panthers look to reach the 3-0 mark against Newton.
