Derby rolls after building big lead over Manhattan
Derby came to play in the 6A sub-state match-up with Manhattan, and rode a big early lead to a 24-6 win and trip back to the state championship game for the 4th straight year.
"It feels good and they're happy but that's pretty hard to do to go four years in a row," said Derby Head Coach Brandon Clark. "But we're not just going to be satisfied with going to state."
Clark of course has coached all four of the Derby teams in the streak and knows how difficult winning that final game can be.
"These kids have not just been talking about going to state, they've been talking about winning state, so hopefully we can accomplish that next week during practice."
Derby came out swinging, as Tre Washington took the first play of the game to the house to give Derby a 7-0 lead. They would add a FG and take a 10-0 lead into the 2nd quarter.
Derby's defense stayed strong throughout the game, and an interception by Migc Aiyanyor was a turning point in the half. After that turnover, Derby rattled off 14 quick points. The Panthers led 24-0 at the half, then let the defense work in the 2nd half on the way to a 24-6 win.
Derby will play Blue Valley North in a state championship re-match in Emporia.
