Coming into Friday night, Newton was touting one of the highest scoring offenses in the state, the Railers were also giving up one of the highest amounts as well. Derby took advantage of the latter in an AVCTL match-up that put the Panthers over the top 75-59.
The Panthers wasted no time getting on the board early, Isaac Ray was the Panthers source of offense in the opening possession draining a three less than thirty seconds into the action. Ray would go on to use a strong take to the rack as the encore in the next possession.
The Panthers had a bulk of offensive success from numerous contributors over the course of the game. When the Panthers did stall, Jacob Karsak got the run going again with a three from the corner.
The Panthers were able to hold one of the best offenses in check, the Railers were still able to find points. Kolyn Sauceda jolted the offense with a pair of big shots in the first half, including an up-and-under layup at the end of the first frame.
Derby will face a tough test against Salina Central in four days while Newton will square off against the best in class 6A, Campus.
