DERBY, Kan. Derby jumped out to an 8-0 lead early in the first quarter and it rode that lead all the way to a 43-24 sub-state championship.
Dodge City did make it interesting in the first quarter, as Becca Unruh hit back-to-back threes. Unruh’s teammate Amaya Perez got in on the action with a three of her own and the Demons trailed 14-9 after the first quarter.
Dodge City’s first two-point basket came with just 1:30 left in the first half. Derby led 25-14 at halftime.
The Panthers’ defense held Dodge City to just 15 points in the final three quarters of the game.
Derby’s consistent full-court pressure, its ability to hit threes and get the ball under the basket proved entirely too much for the Demons.
Where the Panthers put the game away was on points off turnovers. Although Derby finished with 16 turnovers to Dodge City’s 19, it was Derby’s ability to capitalize on those. The Panthers scored 21 points off turnovers to the Demons’ eight.
Derby led the entire game and went on a 16-2 run at one point. Sydney Nilles was a big part of that. The senior led her team with 12 points. She pulled down 8 rebounds, but Addy Brown got one more and finished the game with 9.
Brown finished one rebound shy of a double-double, as she scored 11 points. Nobody had a better night from long range than freshman Maryn Archer. She drained two of her three attempts and finished with 9 points.
