Derby clinches AVCTL DI title for second-consecutive year

HAYSVILLE, Kan. (KWCH) -- The Derby Panther girls checked off one more mark on their way to defending their state title: AVCTL Division I title.

Derby defeated Campus 64-27 Friday night to improve to 18-0 on the season. Head Coach Jodi Karsak said the undefeated streak was no simple feat.

"I'm very proud to coach in this league," she said. "Because you always know you're going to get every team's best."

The senior class won or tied the league three out of their four years, something Karsak said had never been done before in school history. She said these season wins are a result of impeccable team chemistry.

"The thing about this team is, they don't just love playing basketball, they love playing basketball together," she said.

Senior guard Tor'e Alford finished with 11 points, all in the first quarter. She added to that sentiment.

"It's just so great, we just love each other so much!" she said. "I don't think we realized this is it, this is really it. So we're just trying to enjoy every last game with each other and just trying to play as hard as we can and get the job done."

The penultimate season win over Campus was a team victory, spreading the points across nearly every player on the team. Kennedy Brown led the scoring effort with 17 points, all in the second quarter.

The Panthers finish their regular season against Hutchinson on the road Tuesday.
