Collegiate makes statement on road at Wellington

WELLINGTON, Kan. - To open the 2018 season, Wellington made a statement, going to Collegiate for what was then seen as a 32-0 upset.

To open 2019 Friday night, the Spartans returned the favor as Collegiate dominated the run game all night, coming away with a 28-7 road win over the Crusaders.

After forcing a punt on the opening drive, the Spartans rode their stable of running backs, scoring on a three yard run from Nate Voegeli.

The next Wellington drive, it was Collegiate's defense that showed out, with Charlie Goree picking off the Gage Cunningham pass to set the Spartans up. That lead to another running score, with Aidan Walsh capitalizing to make it 14-0.

After trading punts, Wellington took advantage of a short field with Zander Vargas punching in a short score to cut the lead in half.

But Collegiate answered right back with another long drive, this time Michael Fair getting the score on the keeper to put the score at 21-7 at halftime.

Fair again scored right after halftime, driving the pile for the short score, and the Spartan defense did their job the rest of the way in the 28-7 win.

Collegiate will look to start a winning streak from this one, hosting Rose Hill in their home opener. Wellington will have a tough go to avoid an 0-2 start, traveling to Andale next Friday night.
