HALSTEAD, Kan.--- The last time these two programs met was in 2015 when Collegiate ended Halstead's season 21-0.
The Spartans were hoping to repeat history this time around by coming out strong and focusing in their run game to get them the victory over the Dragons.
It was a close fought first half with Collegiate drawing first blood going up 7-0. Halstead would be able to narrow the lead after a failed two-point conversion trail 7-6 going into the half.
There were several penalties on both sides of the ball as tensions were high and these two schools have a rival history.
Both schools also favored the run game in this first game of the playoffs; the Spartans had more success with that attack than the Dragons did.
Collegiate came back in the second half and started to put the game away by scoring 28 more points.
Halstead had averaged about 50 points per game all regular season and Collegiate only allowed them in the endzone twice.
The Spartans advance to the second round over Halstead with a 35-14 final score.
Collegiate will face Cheney in the regional round next Friday. The Cardinals handed the Spartans their first loss of the season back in week 5. The Spartans said they've learned a lot from that game and look forward to the rematch.
