WICHITA, Kan. Collegiate paid Clearwater a visit Friday night in a matchup of two 5-2 teams, but Clearwater sent Collegiate packing in the 35-14 win.
Collegiate controlled field position on Clearwater’s first few drives thanks to a big punt return by Jaden Mitchell. The Spartans scored from four yards out on a Nate Voegeli quarterback keeper to go ahead 7-0 early in the first, but it would be the last time Collegiate led all night.
Clearwater’s Tanner Cash had a good night with a few touchdowns. His first touchdown pass was a big one when he hit Drake Beatty for a 61-yard bomb to tie the game 7-7.
The Indians were able to flip the field when Collegiate muffed a punt and were pinned at its own two-yard line. The Spartans were forced to punt and Clearwater used the momentum to open the playbook a little.
Cash ran a flea flicker and again found Beatty for a huge gain down the middle. A few plays later, Cash found himself under pressure, but he escaped the rush and found Lane Pierce right at the pylon for the 10-yard touchdown pass to go up 14-7.
Collegiate used its final score of the night on a 20-yard touchdown pass from Voegeli to Jack Fox to tie it at 14. Fox hauled in a pass earlier in the drive to help put the Spartans in position to score.
Clearwater scored one more time to make it 21-14 before halftime and never looked back.
Clearwater finishes the regular season 6-2 as Collegiate finishes 5-3.
