For the entire first half, it looked like Chaparral was going to take out Garden Plain with ease. The run game was working the Owls, with Jarrett Shelton getting things started on an 8 yard score, and Jake Burke following him a short time later to make it 14-0 less than 6 minutes in.
Even after Garden Plain got right back into it with a long touchdown run, Chaparral would answer with Burke punching it in for the second time. Just like that, the score went to 23-7.
But in the second half Garden Plain jumped right back in it. The Owls' Jeb Nowak returned a kick for a score to cut the lead to 9. Then late in the fourth, with the score still sitting at 23-14, Caleb Hitt broke free for a 33 yard score to make this a two point game.
But on the legs of Jake Burke, Chaparral would not let this game slip away. He added his third score of the day to ice the game with 1:11 on the clock, the extra point getting the deficit back to 9 for a 30-21 final.
The Roadrunners will face their toughest test of the season next week, hosting fellow 6-0 team Conway Springs in what will ultimately decide Class 2A district 8. Garden Plain has now dropped two straight games, but has a chance to turn it around against winless Wichita Independent next week.
